  37. A potentially sad report that the world will hear much more about over the next
  38. two weeks. Apparently, thermal panels on the MIR space station have failed, and
  39. 2 cosmonauts are in some danger of freezing to death in space. The Russians
  40. are mounting a rescue mission, which will probably two weeks to happen. So far
  41. the two cosmonauts are OK, but this situation will probably deteriorate as the
  42. days pass.

  67. Ahem.....a small pointer to life in the Sou'west Pacific: Cape York is in
  68. the NE corner of Australia. New Zealand is two+ islands to the SW of Australia
  69. and is a separate country. NZ policies are not reflected in Oz policies.
  70. Therefore: RTG based missions can be launched from the Cape York facility.

  89. Reports surfaced on ABC today that the Soyuz crew transfer vehicle currently
  90. docked to the Soviet Mir space station is damaged in some way and cannot be
  91. used to return to earth.

  93. Details on the nature of the problem are unavailable.

  95. The craft, Soyuz TM-9, was initially launched in February.  Currently it
  96. and a single Progress resupply vehicle are at the Mir station.  This event
  97. effectively strands the two crew currently at Mir there, since the Progress 
  98. cannon be used to return humans to earth.

  100. The reports also indicated that a EVA was planned for sometime next month to
  101. attempt to repair the malfunction or damage.  Presumeably some repair parts
  102. will be flown on the next Progress flight, scheduled for the near future.

  104. If the cosmonauts are unable to repair the problem, the Soviet expansion
  105. schedule for the Mir station, already well behind schedule, will be thrown
  106. into chaos, as a Soyuz will have to be made available as an alternate crew
  107. return vehicle for the cosmonauts already there, requiring a new launch to
  108. be fitted in to the schedule.
